Job description
Take overall responsibility for the management of the children's home, ensuring that all children receive the highest quality of care in line with Ofsted standards.
Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team, providing direction, supervision, and support.
Care Planning & Safeguarding: Ensure effective care planning for each child, promoting their welfare, health, education, and development.
Monitor individual care plans and risk assessments, ensuring they meet the emotional, social, and educational needs of the children.
Promote and safeguard the welfare of children, ensuring all safeguarding procedures are adhered to.
Compliance & Ofsted Regulations: Ensure that the home operates in full compliance with the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015, Children’s Act, and Ofsted inspection framework.
Maintain the home’s registration with Ofsted, preparing for and managing inspections to ensure a rating of “Good” or “Outstanding.” Staff Recruitment & Development:
Lead the recruitment, training, and development of staff to ensure they are fully equipped to deliver high-quality care.
Provide ongoing supervision and support to staff, including performance reviews, appraisals, and professional development plans.
Therapeutic & Child-Centred Care: Implement therapeutic care models and create a nurturing environment that promotes the emotional well-being of children and young people with complex needs, including those with trauma, attachment disorders, and behavioural challenges.
Budget & Resource Management: Manage the home’s budget effectively, ensuring cost control without compromising the quality of care. Ensure efficient use of resources, monitoring expenditures, and maintaining accurate financial records.
Incident & Complaint Management: Respond to and manage any incidents, complaints, or safeguarding concerns. Ensure that incidents are appropriately recorded, investigated, and resolved, and that lessons learned are implemented in practice.
Partnership Working: Build positive relationships with external agencies, including social workers, schools, therapists, and local authorities. Represent the home in multi-disciplinary meetings and work collaboratively to ensure positive outcomes for the children.
Health & Safety: Ensure the home is compliant with health and safety regulations, conducting regular risk assessments, and maintaining a safe and secure environment for children, staff, and visitors.
Family Liaison: Promote positive relationships with the children’s families, where appropriate, ensuring clear communication and family involvement in the care and decision-making processes.
Essential requirements
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care (Children and Young People's Residential Management): A recognised qualification relevant to the management of children’s residential care services.
Ofsted Registered Manager Experience: Proven experience as a Registered Manager within a children’s residential setting, with a track record of maintaining a “Good” or “Outstanding” rating in Ofsted inspections.
Knowledge of Childcare Legislation & Ofsted Regulations: In-depth knowledge of the Children’s Homes Regulations, Children’s Act, Ofsted’s inspection framework, and other relevant childcare legislation.
Experience Working with Vulnerable Children: Substantial experience working with children and young people with complex needs, such as those with emotional and behavioural difficulties, trauma, or attachment disorders.
Safeguarding Knowledge: A strong understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures, with the ability to identify and act upon safeguarding concerns promptly and effectively.
Leadership & People Management Skills: Demonstrated leadership and management skills, with experience in recruiting, developing, and managing staff teams in a residential care setting.
Emotional Resilience & Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to remain calm under pressure, deal with challenging behaviours, and resolve conflicts in a sensitive and effective manner.
Excellent Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work with children, families, staff, and external agencies collaboratively.
Organisational & Time-Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities, prioritising effectively while maintaining high standards of care.
Driver’s Licence: A full UK driving licence is often required for managing the home, attending meetings, and liaising with external services.
